Good UX isn't enough — interfaces should feel good too

There's a common framing in product design that usability and delight are in tension — that every bit of personality added to an interface is a small tax on clarity, and the disciplined choice is always to strip it out.

In practice, the interfaces people describe as feeling 'good to use' are rarely the most stripped-down. They're the ones where small moments — a button that responds instantly, a transition that clarifies what just happened, copy that sounds like a person — add up to a sense that the thing was made carefully.

Feedback is usability, not decoration

A button that visibly responds the instant it's pressed isn't more 'delightful' than one that doesn't — it's more usable, because it answers the question 'did that work?' immediately. The fact that it also feels nice is a side effect of doing the usability part properly.

Personality earns trust

Error messages written in a generic, robotic tone don't read as more 'professional' — they read as a sign nobody on the other end is paying attention. A small amount of personality in copy, used consistently, signals that a person is behind the interface, which matters most exactly when something's gone wrong.

None of this is permission to add motion or copy for its own sake — that's where the original criticism of 'delight' usually comes from, and it's fair. But the answer isn't to remove personality. It's to make sure every bit of it is doing a job.
